Supporting Phonemic Awareness
Why is it important?
Phonemic Awareness is a prerequisite for decoding and encoding words which leads to the ultimate purpose of reading: comprehension.
Supporting Phonemic Awareness is a seven-week course designed to provide educators with an understanding of phonemic awareness and approaches for promoting these skills in their classrooms based on State Standards. Participants will focus on effective methods for assessing students’ phonemic awareness abilities and will learn to create activities to strengthen their proficiency levels. This course will culminate with the development of individual plans to incorporate phonemic awareness activities into the curriculum already being utilized by schools. A thorough understanding of phonemic awareness is essential before moving forward to the other components of reading.
